Nordic House Closure
Beloved Berkeley Scandinavian specialty store will close its doors December 31
Nordic House, the Scandinavian specialty store located in West Berkeley, plans to close its doors for good December 31, followed by a liquidation sale in January. In preparation for their regularly busy holiday season, it will also end sandwich service beginning November 24.
Fans will recall that Nordic House very nearly closed in 2019, as Berkeleyside Nosh reported.
High shipping costs and the difficulty of maintaining a specialty store are the reasons why Nordic House plans to finally close its doors for good in 2021, according to one employee.
It will be a loss for Berkeley, particularly for those who have become attached to it as a source for unique Scandinavian and European items such as lefse bread, chocolate-covered marzipan, and lutefisk. In addition to their imported goods, several of Nordic House’s items are made in-house, such as their Swedish meatballs and gravy. Their lunch hour is particularly popular for their affordable sandwiches, which are touted by many locals as being among the best in the Bay Area.
Patrons and locals in search of a good bite and Scandinavian cultural goods should head over to Nordic House before December 31.
Nordic House is located at 2709 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley, CA 94702.
